About Us

Fr. George T. Montague, S.M.

Fr. George

Author of more than twenty books in the area of biblical and pastoral theology, received his doctorate in Sacred Theology at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. Former president of the Catholic Biblical Association of America and editor of the Catholic Biblical Quarterly, he has been a speaker on six continents. He served as seminary rector in the U. S. and Canada and was director of novices for six years in Kathmandu, Nepal.

In 1995, with Fr. Bob Hogan, he began a new religious community in the Marianist family, the "Brothers of the Beloved Disciple.” Fr. George also teaches Scripture at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, Texas. With Father Marshall, he was given permission by his Marianist superiors to work with the new community of the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple. Fr. Fr. Bob Hogan, B.B.D.

Fr. Bob

Father Bob comes with a wide pastoral experience, especially in working with youth (he is a former basketball coach). He also pursued graduate studies in Marian Theology and taught at the University of Dayton and St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Father Bob Hogan's vows in the Society of Mary have been suspended so that he can become a member of the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple, and Archbishop Gomez accepted him into the process of incardination into the Archdiocese of San Antonio, to which the new community of the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple is attached. That means that he, and Fr. Will Combs, will be a canonically full member of the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple, which is in the first stage of becoming an Institute of Consecrated Life.

Before coming to San Antonio, Father Bob was liaison for the Charismatic Renewal in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. Having served on the National Service Committee of the Charismatic Renewal he was elected as its chairman in January 2011. Since August 1, 2007 he has been working with Bishop Thomas Flanagan as an associate liaison for the Charismatic Renewal in San Antonio. Formerly pastor at St. Mary Magdalen, he will now devote his time to ministry in the Charismatic renewal for the Archdiocese of San Antonio and the formation program of the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple.

Fr. Joseph Mary Marshall, S.M.

Fr. Joseph Mary

On June 1, 2006, Archbishop José Gomez appointed Father Joseph Mary Marshall, S.M., pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish in San Antonio, replacing Father Bob Hogan, B.B.D., who completed his 6-year term. Father Joseph Mary was born in New York and raised in Connecticut, and following a powerful conversion experience in 1980, he joined the Marianists in 1983 and was ordained in 1993. He served as hospital chaplain, as campus minister at Brandeis University and then as Associate Pastor in Sykesville, Maryland, before coming to join the community in San Antonio in 2002, to serve as Parochial Vicar and to help in the formation program of the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple.

Fr. Mary Joseph has three Masters' Degrees, one of them in Pastoral Counseling, and has been involved since 1985 in Exodus referral ministries that helps those with unwanted homosexual attractions find freedom and healing. He is also chaplain for the local "Courage" chapter, a Catholic ministry to help those with same sex attractions to live a chaste life in accordance with the Church's teaching.

Since June 2007 he is pastor of St. Mary Magdalen parish in San Antonio.

He loves music, plays the guitar, and has written numerous songs. He joined the community in 1996 and was ordained on May 29, 2004, by Bishop Thomas Flanagan, Auxiliary Bishop of San Antonio and Episcopal Advisor to the Brothers of the Beloved Disciple, shown here on the day of his ordination.
