Quakes, Questions, and the Empty Tomb

Haiti. Chile. Cities instantly in rubble, crushing to death two hundred thousand men, women and children, maiming more, orphaning hundreds. The planet, for all its size, is fragile.

Fr. George

But the cost in human lives and the magni-tude of human suffering led many to ask if the message led some to say Haiti was God.s pun-ishment for Voodoo.
I don.t know God.s mind, but I saw God instead in the angels of mercy who rushed to the rescue and healing of the survivors.

Another kind of earthquake 2000 years ago

There was another kind of earthquake two thousand years ago that destroyed nothing but announced the end of death itself. “Mary Mag-dalene and the other Mary approached the tomb. And behold there was a great earth-quake; for an angel of the Lord…rolled back the stone.. „Do not be afraid! I know that you are seeking Jesus the crucified. He is not here, for he has been raised just as he said..” (Matthew 28:1-6).

May the joyful shock of the risen Lord give you a heartquake this Easter!

'Companion God' Book Reissued

Book

Father Montague's book, Companion God: A Cross-Cultural Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, originally published in 1989 upon his return from Nepal and India, has just been reissued in a revised edition by Paulist Press.

The colorful pictures on the cover suggest some of the cultural practices that evoke biblical times and provide comparisons and contrasts with the Gospel.
